The Bob Hoover Legacy Foundation, has announced that beginning in 2018, it will annually recognize organizations and/or individuals who are making important contributions to the betterment of American aviation’s future with a “Bob Hoover Award of Aviation Excellence.”
The Bob Hoover Legacy Foundation was founded prior to Bob’s passing in 2016. In accordance with his wishes, the Foundation’s mission is to support programs and individuals who are instrumental in shaping aviation’s future. It fulfills its mission through the awarding of academic scholarships, partnerships with other aviation mentoring and education programs, and by maintaining Bob’s “presence” through exhibits at major aviation venues and through various media programs.
According to the Foundation: “The Bob Hoover Award of Aviation Excellence will be given to an individual, organization, company, program, educational institution, or government entity that has advanced and improved the future of American aviation in a manner consistent with the standards of technical excellence, safety, determination and generosity of spirit that defined the life and career of Robert Anderson “Bob” Hoover.”
In making the announcement, Tracy Forrest, Foundation President, said, “Bob wanted his legacy, to be one of looking forward to exciting new developments in airplanes and piloting, not memorializing past accomplishments. We are establishing this Award on Bob’s behalf to encourage and inspire those who are actively working to achieve that vision.”
Foundation Chairman Michael Herman said, “This Award is not an additional trophy celebrating the incredible life and career of Bob Hoover. The Legacy Foundation is extremely proud to partner with AOPA on the Bob Hoover Trophy which continues to recognize great aviators each year. Rather, this is about inspiring excellence in those who touch the aviators of tomorrow. The Award is intended to recognize important contributions to aviation’s future and to thank those who are making them.
The first Bob Hoover Award of Aviation Excellence will be given during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, as part of the program for the Legacy Foundation’s “Evening With Bob Hoover”, Wednesday night, July 25th.
